It may seem counter-intuitive, but wine grapes (like people) need to struggle a little to develop real character. They are best grown in regions that offer a good balance among water, nutrients, sunlight and heat. The right balance of sunlight and heat, in particular, is most often found in two bands around the globe from 30-50 degrees north and south latitude.
